Build the Umbrella Before the Rain Comes
Most dreams do not fail because they are too big. They fail because nothing was built underneath them to hold their weight.
If you have ever set a goal with real excitement, only to watch it quietly fall apart a few weeks later, this is probably the reason. And once you see it, you cannot unsee it. It can change how you build everything from here on out.
We spend so much time dreaming about the life we want. Perhaps it is time to spend a little more time building the structure that will actually hold those dreams up.
I have always loved umbrellas
Not just because they keep us dry or shaded, although those are certainly bonuses, but because they say something about the person carrying them. Some people choose practical ones, others go for bright colours, bold prints, or something delightfully quirky.
My favourite umbrella is black on the outside but lined with coloured panels. To everyone else it looks rather sensible, but I get to look up at a rainbow. It makes me ridiculously happy, especially on a gloomy London day.
It also reminds me of something important, and sometimes I think our lives are a lot like umbrellas.
The canopy and the framework
The canopy is our dreams. It is the part we can picture so easily. We imagine the meaningful career, the loving relationships, the beautiful home, the adventure we have always wanted to take, or simply waking up each morning feeling content instead of exhausted. We become attached to that picture because it is exciting and inspiring, and usually far more enjoyable to think about than the realities of everyday life.
The interesting thing is that the canopy is not what makes an umbrella work.
Beneath the fabric is an intricate framework of spokes, struts, hinges, and supports. We hardly ever notice them. I do not think anyone has ever walked into a shop and said, "I would like the umbrella with the finest engineering, please." We buy the pretty one.
Yet without that hidden structure, the most beautiful umbrella in the world is simply a rumpled piece of fabric.
Our dreams work exactly the same way.
What the framework is made of
The framework is built from all the permissions you have given yourself over the years. It is made up of the experiences you have collected, the lessons you have learned, the difficult conversations you have had, and the actions you have taken — even the tiny ones that did not seem particularly significant at the time.
Every time you have chosen courage instead of comfort, you have added another spoke. Every time you have learned a new skill, set a healthy boundary, asked for help, changed direction, or decided to trust yourself just a little more, you have strengthened the structure.
Most of us like to skip straight to the dream. We want the beautiful canopy without giving much thought to what has to sit underneath it. Then we wonder why it keeps collapsing the first time life gets a little windy.
Dream first — then build
Personally, I think it is far more motivating to begin with the canopy. Dream first.
Imagine it in as much detail as you possibly can. What does your life look like? Who are you spending time with? How do your days begin? What makes you laugh? What kind of work fills you with energy instead of draining it? What would make you look up and smile, the way I do every time I see the inside of that umbrella?
Once you have that picture, something interesting happens. The goals become easier to identify because they now have somewhere to go. Your daily actions begin to make sense because they are connected to something much bigger than ticking another item off a to-do list. Instead of asking, "What should I do next?" you start asking, "What would help support the life I am trying to create?"
That is a very different question.
Perhaps one spoke is learning to communicate more honestly. Another is looking after your health. Another might be building financial confidence, going back to school, taking the first step towards a new business, or finally giving yourself permission to stop living according to someone else's expectations.
Every umbrella is different because every dream is different.
The moment it opens
What matters is remembering that dreams do not magically appear one morning fully formed. They open because, over time, you have built something strong enough to hold them.
So design your canopy. Make it colourful. Make it elegant. Make it wonderfully, unapologetically yours. Then, quietly and consistently, begin building the framework underneath it.
One day you will press the little button, the umbrella will open exactly as it was designed to, and you will realise that the dream was not built in that single moment.
It had been taking shape all along.
